Star Wars Rebels Season 3 Dead Pool: Who Will Die by Season’s End?

Star Wars Rebels is rocketing to its season three conclusion, as the four Saturdays of March will see it march to its season finale, and it should be quite the finish. Still left, we have Mon Mothma, hijacked droids, a big showdown between Obi-Wan “Old Ben” Kenobi and no-longer-Darth-just Maul on Tatooine, and the hour-long finale that sees what happens when Thrawn gets fed up and finds the Rebels base.

Yeah, it’s going to be a crazy month. But it’s also going to be a tense one. As Star Wars Rebels inches ever closer to the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Star Wars: A New Hope, the fate of the characters on the crew gets ever cloudier. Sabine Wren left the crew to help her Mandalorian family and people – and that may have saved her from a worse threat. We know from the audio cue cameo that Hera doesn’t just make it to at least the Battle of Scarif in Rogue One, but gets promoted to General before then, as well. Chopper likewise appeared on screen in the movie, so he’s pretty safe.

But everyone else? Well, they’re not just fair game, they’re likely to be gone before the events of Rogue One, and some of them pretty much have to be dead or at the least completely exiled by the time A New Hope starts (looking at you, Jedi). Read on for the top six main characters that could be taking a fall in the next month, as well as our guesses of just how likely that is.

Grand Admiral Thrawn

Odds: 10,000 : 1

Look, if Star Wars Rebels doesn’t finish this season with a major victory for Grand Admiral Thrawn, or worse, him dying, then what was the point of bringing him on? Luckily, EP Dave Filoni seems to agree.

“Thrawn is a great example of that. I could’ve created a new admiral, right?” Filoni recently told ComicBook.com while talking about pulling characters from the old EU, now Legends. “But why, when there’s such a fantastic character like Thrawn? As long as you can use that character the right way, the way they were intended, and you’re not changing them, because if you’re going to change them too much, then don’t even bother. Leave that character alone until you can use them in a way that we’re familiar with.”

Yeah, he’s not dying, and look for the Rebel Alliance to be dealt a heavy blow when Thrawn attacks in the hour-long finale on March 25, 2017.

Ezra Bridger and Kanan Jarrus

Odds: 2000:1

It’s not outside the realm of possibility for one of the two Jedi on the show to die this season. Ezra is a much longer shot, since he’s really the main character of the show – if it’s going to continue into a true season four of the series, something that’s been implied but not confirmed, then Ezra needs to be there.

As for Kanan, he’s in a unique position on his own. It seems like he’s more likely to move beyond being a Jedi – becoming something new – than that he’ll simply die. It’s funny to think about, since he only truly became a Jedi Knight last season, but his blinding and his training with Bendu have absolutely, fundamentally changed him. I think that’s his way out – he simply won’t be a Jedi any longer when the series ends. Still, his death, coupled with the way Ezra has already been tempted with the dark side, would certainly change things up considerably.

Darth Maul

Odds: 10 : 1

Poor Maul. Somehow he’s actually become a bit of a sympathetic character, thanks largely to the performance by voice actor Sam Witwer. The character has truly learned new emotions like hope and empathy – things he literally did not have as a Sith in training taken from a young age, and it has changed him. Still, all signs point to a major showdown with Obi-Wan (or rather, Old Ben) Kenobi on Tatooine in the episode “Twin Suns,” and Darth Maul’s story has to end, and end soon. That means death or exile, and he doesn’t seem like the kind to just “go away.” The thing is, Ben Kenobi at this point in his life, just a couple years ahead of finally taking Luke under his wing and after a decade and a half of heavy meditation, doesn’t seem like the kind to just kill someone, even over a two-decade grudge. This is a tough one to call, but pretty good odds.

Captain Rex

Odds: 5 : 1

Clone Captain Rex, unswayed by Order 66, has already lived far longer than he ever probably should have. I know some people have their “head canon” that he’s the old man on Endor in Return of the Jedi, and he still may well be. But he’s also, like it or not, the most “expendable” member of the current team, especially since he doesn’t have that Ahsoka connection anymore. The fact that he’s become closer to Kanan than the Jedi would’ve ever dreamed sadly increases his chances of biting it, too. Plus, hey, Clones died all the time on The Clone Wars.

Zeb

Odds: 5 : 1

The other character that fits into that mold is Garazeb Orrelios, the former Lasat Honor Guard. Zeb has come a long way from being just “the bruiser” of the team, as he’s learned to care for Ezra, to respect clones and droids, and even find common ground with an Imperial, for the love of the Force. He also found out his people were not entirely wiped out, giving him something else worth fighting for. It’s possible, surely, that Zeb was still at the Battle of Scarif, sitting in the gunner position of the Ghost as General Hera flew it. It’s also possible that he goes off to find more Lasat. It’s also very possible that he won’t make it out alive. Hope not – but this is a character that would impact every member of the crew and yet still let the show carry on.

Agent Kallus

Odds: 2 : 1

And the odds on favorite to die this season is Agent Kallus. When he turned double agent and started working for the Rebels as a new Fulcrum, he pretty much sealed his fate. There are other Fulcrum agents, possibly simultaneously (even one of the Rogue One stars, Captain Cassian Andor – bore the title for awhile), so the position is certainly open to rotation. Ultimately, Thrawn, who knows about the double agent, is only going to use Kallus/Fulcrum as long as he’s useful – and seeing as we know Thrawn finds the Rebels on their current Chopper Base, well, his usefulness has an expiration. Sadly, that means Agent Kallus, who has become a fan-favorite in his three seasons, probably has an expiration date too – and it’s probably coming due.
