The dream of expansion within the Star Wars universe — including the possibility of a Darth Vader standalone film — could be realized and according to Lucasfilm VP and Executive Creative Director Doug Chiang the re-introduction to Vader’s Castle may be coming with it.

In an interview with Donna Dickens, Chiang said that the tip-of-the-cap Easter Egg in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story of the evil castle from original Empire Strikes Back sketches may be explored deeper in other movies.

“It’s interesting, we did a lot of history exploration. Why did Vader build his castle here? Why does it look the way it does? Why does he even come here? For us, it was really figuring out that Vader built his castle on an existing structure, which was this ancient lava dam,” he said. “He built it here for a very specific reason. It was to come back here to meditate, to rejuvenate, to reconnect with himself. And it became a very spiritual place, and it was all centered around his bacta tank. And that’s where the form language all built around there. And we’ve done quite a bit of exploration of what’s on the inside of it as well, and hopefully that’ll be seen in some other film.”

The next, logical, place for a glimpse at the castle on Mustafar is in The Last Jedi, but no matter where it is at the very mention of exploration of so many of the Sith Lords motivations is worthy of discussion.

What is most exciting is that this wasn’t an answer in theoretical context. It was present. There is already exploration of what is inside the walls. There is hope that it will be shown in other films.

The reason for a quick glimpse and not an exploration of the castle in Rogue One was pretty obvious: it didn’t tie in to what that story had to tell.

The reason for optimism is also pretty obvious: it’s inclusion was unneeded to tell that story but was left and is now being openly discussed.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi, from writer/director Rian Johnson, is in post-production now for a December 15, 2017 release. The film follows-up and continues the story of the next generation of the saga as Rey, Poe, Finn, and Kylo Ren find their place in the galaxy and follow the legacy of Luke Skywalker, Leia, and Han Solo. Daisy Ridley returns to star as Rey, with other returning stars John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Domhnall Gleeson, Gwendoline Christie, Peter Mayhew, Andy Serkis, Anthony Daniels, Lupita Nyong’o Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa. Benicio Del Toro and Laura Dern join the cast in as-yet-unrevealed roles.
