When Fear the Walking Dead began, it introduced a very compelling and mysterious character: Colman Domingo's Victor Strand. First appearing late in the first season, the charasmatic charmer used his words to help himself and Nick Clark out of their confinement in Southern California.
From there, the character had unexpected access to a yacht and was revealed to be a con man, of sorts, during a flashback episode later in the series. Those skills will help Strand preserve his own life in the Dead world, however, he may have to adapt and adopt a new style if plans to last much longer.
Heading into Fear the Walking Dead's third season, Domingo tells ComicBook.com that each character on the series has moved into their "warrior self in order to survive," with Strand being no exception.
Still, we shouldn't expect him to pick up a weapon, any time soon. "I looked around the other day when I was on set, and I noticed that I was the only one without a weapon," Domingo said. "That's sad!"
"He's kind of scrappy in that way. I think if it's necessary, he will grab what's available. Would he hang on to it? I'm not so sure. I think he still thinks that his strongest weapon is his mind and his tongue. I think that's something he knows will never fail him. He can never run out of bullets of that. He's always got a magic bullet and it's about psychology with another human being."
Given the only look at Strand in Fear's most recent promotional material had the character on the edge of being tossed from a dam, it's safe to say he will have to continue his talkative nature before finding another method of survival.
As for whether or not Strand has any interest in reuniting with the group which helped keep him safe, Domingo is unsure, though it sounds like it will happen. In fact, the actor isn't even sure if his character has any actual investment in the other bunch.
"I don't think that's a conscious thing in his mind," Domingo said. "He let them go out on their own regard. I think, possibly, maybe, that somewhere inside him, deep inside, he's hopeful he will reunite, if it's for the betterment of everyone else."
"He knows that it's just part of his nature to rebuild, to find a new ally in some way. But I think that he isn't hanging on to that. You know, Strand's suffered some losses, some setbacks. And in moving forward, he's pretty good about letting you know. Understanding that this is for him, it was necessary for this moment, but moments aren't meant to last forever."
This all points to what Strand has been up to since the group left the hotel at the end of Season 2.
"We compromised the compound, so he wants to stay behind, reassess the situation, take care of his wound, and then move forward in a way that he believed he had the most agency to do so with," Domingo said. "He has been, like we saw at the end of season 2, he has been resting in the hotel room for about possibly, 3 or 4 episodes. That man, I think is not someone who just rests. He's creating another plan and he's trying to figure things out, trying to figure out what's the new currency in this world and how he can get to it. I think Strand is a man who has a plan A, B, and C. And now he's thinking how to move forward."
"If he does run into them, I think he will be welcome and open to it. But I don't think he's searching for that."prevnext
