Further Proof ‘Breaking Bad’ Is A ‘Walking Dead’ Prequel

In the age of shared universes taking movies and television by storm, the theory of Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead co-existing is surprisingly plausible.

On Sunday night, Fear the Walking Dead featured the latest connection to AMC‘s popular drug pedaling series Breaking Bad in its midseason 3 premiere. As Madison Clark entered a Bazar in Mexico, the tune of “Negro y Azul: The Ballad of Heisenberg” played. It’s a song which debuted in the form of a music video, opening the seventh episode of Breaking Bad‘s second season.

The song tells the story of the man behind a major drug circle: known to Breaking Bad fans as Walter White. “I tried to be subtle with it,” Fear‘s showrunner Dave Erickson said. “That was probably the moment when I fell the most deeply in love with Breaking Bad, when they did that cold open music video. As we were looking for pieces to incorporate into this world, it had the right vibe to it. It’s a gentle nod of admiration and adoration to Vince Gilligan.”

The use of the “Negro y Azul” song was not the first connection to Breaking Bad in the Dead universe on AMC…

Blue Sky

Blue-Meth

In The Walking Dead‘s second season, a bag of drugs Merle Dixon had been carrying comes into focus.

The racist, drug abusing character kept a hefty stash on him at all times. In the bag was what many fans suspect to be meth. More specifically, the blue drugs resemble the Blue Sky methย created by Walter White in Breaking Bad.ย

In Episode 4×06 of The Walking Dead, Daryl Dixon opens up to Beth Greene about his brother a bit. What he revealed, though, is a furthering of the BreakingBad-is-a-prequel-to-TheWalkingDead theory.

“Merle had this dealer,” Daryl said. “This janky little white guy.”

That description sure does fit the bill of Aaron Paul’s Jesse Pinkmanย character on Breaking Bad! Of course, it could just be some random character, but that is both less fun and seems like it could’ve been stated without such specific detail considering Merle was a character who would likely surround himself exclusively with white guys, anyway.

There has not been a concrete answer as to whether or not Breaking Bad is actually a prequel to The Walking Dead and its sibling series Fear the Walking Dead just yet. Should the fan theory gain some steam, the cast and crew of the show will likely be posed with the question directly sooner or later.ย

At the same time, The Walking Dead has featured several Easter eggs referencing other popular titles, including LOST and The X-Files.ย
