When Riverdale returns for its second season in October, Camila Mendes’s Veronica Lodge will be one of the characters who changes the most — in no small part due to the return of her father, Hiram, who spent all of season 1 in jail.

Now that Mark Consuelos joined the cast as Hiram Lodge, Hermione (Marisol Nichols) will be taking his side more often than not, which not only creates a new dynamic between Veronica and her dad…but potentially plays hell with the existing dynamic between Mendes and Nichols’s characters.

“Veronica is suspicious of both of them, doesn’t trust them,” Mendes said. “She wants to have a good relationship with Hiram because she’s daddy’s little girl at the end of the day. She wants to please him and show him she’s strong and that she’s capable of being a Lodge. She wants to be a Lodge and take that name and legacy, but her father, in trying to protect her, is keeping her at arm’s length.”

Things aren’t much better with her mother.

“Veronica’s relationship with Hermione has fallen apart,” Mendes added. “In season 1, we used to brag about how close they were and in season 2, they’re not anymore. There’s so much distance because Hiram has sworn Hermione to secrecy and Veronica is no longer part of that.”

You can hear a podcast interview with Nichols about her relationship with Veronica during season 1, and going forward in season 2, below.

As the town breathed a collective sigh of relief that Jason’s killer had been found out, another terrible crime occurred, in a space that had been considered one of the town’s safest, most innocent places. If Jason Blossom’s murder revealed the slimy underbelly beneath Riverdale‘s surface, as we enter Season Two, the shooting of Fred Andrews threatens to plunge the entire town into utter darkness.

Riverdale returns to TV for its second season on October 11 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
