‘The Simpsons’ Season Premiere Will Feature a ‘Game of Thrones’ Homage

It might be a long while until Game of Thrones returns to television screens, but fans can soon feel the series’ influence on an upcoming episode of The Simpsons.

Executive producer Al Jean recently teased The Simpsons‘ upcoming 29th season, including a Game of Thrones “homage” in the season premiere.

According to TVLine, the scene will feature a guest voice by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who plays Thrones fan-favorite Jaime Lannister. While details about the scene were scarce, Jean hinted that Coster-Waldau’s character will develop “[a] weird, surprising connection to Marge.”

It’s unclear if The Simpsons‘ Thrones homage will evoke the HBO series from toe to tip, but fans are sure to speculate about what that ‘connection’ will be.

The season will also include an homage to La La Land, with Lisa getting caught in a love triangle between Nelson and a new older character voiced by Ed Sheeran. And as it turns out, a past Simpsons connection helped bring that parody to life on the show.

“We cleared some of the music from the movie, which was written by [Justin Hurwitz], who wrote a script for us once.” Jean explained, referencing the Season 23 episode ‘The Falcon and the D’ohman.’

The show will also dive into some less-topical plot points, including the return of director Llewellyn Sinclair (Jon Lovitz). And after quite some time, the series will finally get to the bottom of the “psychological reasons behind why Sideshow Bob wants to kill Bart.” And according to Jean, there’s quite a story behind it.

“It begins with Bart getting lost in an abandoned Nike missile station from the 1960s, and includes Kelsey Grammer singing a little Gilbert and Sullivan,” Jean teased.

The Simpsons’ 29th season premieres on October 1st.
