Arrow's Brandon Routh Has Seen Concept Art For The Atom Costume

During a radio interview released online today, Superman Returns and Arrow star Brandon Routh told The DJ Tanner Show (please hold your Full House jokes until the end of the class) that he's seen sketches for what The Atom's costume will look like.

Of course, while the original casting call for the character suggested that he would be suiting up as a tech-based superhero, he's only been officially referred to as "Ray Palmer," not "The Atom," since it was announced that Routh would be joining the show and at times the producers have tried to play coy as to whether we would seee him in a costume at all this season.

The (seemingly-)definitive answer came up when Routh was talking about his Superman costume, and then segued to Arrow.

"It's a totally different suit and I haven't been in it yet, I've only seen drawings," Routh told the hosts when pressed for details on his Arrow role. "It's a very different character and I reallyc an't say too much about what the suit's going to look like -- just that it's very different and I don't believe it has a cape, which doesn't really surprise anybody if you've seen The Atom in the comics. But it's a cool opportunity; it's a cool show with a huge following. They do a great job grounding the show. Having my character on there -- he has a lot of different elements. I get to come on there and [do some] comedy in a pretty dark world. My character, Ray Palmer, interacts with Felicity mostly in the episodes I've shot so far and it's just a lot of fun. I have a great time working with Emily. I think it's going to add it a whole new element to the show that I think fans will like, whether they dislike Ray getting into the middle of the Oliver/Felicity relationship or not."

Asked when he will get to put the suit on, Routh said that he didn't know -- but that it isn't in the first six episodes, which have already been filmed.

Earlier in the episode, he had been asked about living with his legacy as the star of Superman Returns, and Routh said that he didn't mind...in part, because most of the fans he'd spoken to were enthusiastic. He told them that nobody had "had the balls" to insult the film or his performance to his face, and that the worst he gets is people who seem ashamed to like it.

"It doesn't weigh on me and never really did," Routh said. "I took the job knowing full well that was going to be something that was going to be part of my life probably forever. Thankfully, it's in a good way. I'm proud of the movie and a lot of people enjoyed it so that helps, I guess. And having it be such an inspirational, iconic role, that's a nice thing to carry with me and have it be part of who people see me as."

Arrow returns on October 8 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.

As much as I am annoyed we didn't get Ted (as it is clear that is what the producers were building towards) it will be interesting to see a hero with superpowers on Arrow. And if it means we get the 'I shrink down and ride one of your arrows' bit, I am for it.

Still... here is hoping that they can't use Ted because he will be in a Booster Gold/Blue Beetle show.

  1. I know the superman character wasn't overly popular,  but Brandon showed how great he can be in Chuck.  Was a great character,  I am excited to see what he does with this character.  Never been much  of a fan of the atom character but I'm sure they can make it awesome in this show

  2. I really don't think Brandon's Superman being unpopular is a reflection of him or his own acting ability. It's a reflection of Singer dying to recreate Christopher Reeve in Brandon, and Brandon being bound by Singer's narrow-minded directorial vision of how he wanted him to act, look, etc. I think there was a lot of potential to Brandon playing Superman, but it was completely sabotaged by another's hands. I've seen him in several other roles and feel that he's a great actor and (while I'm not a big fan of The Atom either) I think he'll do a great job on Arrow. Can't wait for season 3 to finally start up!
