David Ayer, director of next month's Brad Pitt military drama Fury, is reportedly being considered a potential director for a Suicide Squad movie From Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment, according to Variety.

Ayer previously directed End of Watch and wrote Training Day.

The concept revolves around a group of supervillains who are coerced into service as a special operations military team in order to earn time off their sentences. They're equipped with explosive devices that prevent them from escaping.

The Suicide Squad is currently part of the storyline on The CW's Arrow, and have been rumored for a spinoff miniseries. They also appeared in the recent direct-to-video movie Batman: Assault on Arkham, which is set in the world of the Rocksteady Arkham Asylum video game series.

The film, described as "dark and edgy," will be produced by Dan Lin from a script by Justin Marks. Marks previously wrote Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li and is currently adapting The Jungle Book for Warner Bros. and the Vertigo comic book series FBP: Federal Bureau of Physics.

Variety gives no indication as to which Suicide Squad members will appear (it has a rotating cast for a number of obvious reasons) but says that the characters will likely have an opportunity to cross over between other DC properties and vice versa, suggesting that villains who appear in upcoming DC movies could move into potential Suicide Squad sequels, and Squad members could head out of this movie and into antagonist roles elsewhere.

The most common Suicide Squad members are Deadshot and Bronze Tiger, although Batman villain Harley Quinn has become the face of the group since the launch of the New 52. Other notable characters who sometimes appear on the team include Captain Boomerang, Bane, King Shark and Plastique. They're generally run by Amanda Waller, who heads (depending on the timeline and continuity) shadowy government organizations like Checkmate and A.R.G.U.S. This season, Arrow will feature Waller as an antagonist in flashbacks and in the current day, she's been fired from her job at A.R.G.U.S.
