The Walking Dead: Daryl Smoked The Same Brand Cigarettes as Dale...And On The X-Files and Breaking Bad

Tonight on AMC's The Walking Dead, Daryl had a smoke -- the first time we've seen anybody smoking on the show in a while.

Maybe since Dale, actually, who smoked Morleys, the same brand Daryl uses here and a recurring prop-brand used to avoid endorsing or sponsoring a specific brand of cigarettes.

(Of course, they look so much like Marlboros, it's kind of a wasted effort.)

The brand's most recognizable appearance was on The X-Files, as the preferred brand of the series big bad The Cigarette-Smoking Man. They've also appeared as an Easter egg in Californication, the Showtime series starring The X-Files' David Duchovny. On AMC, they previously appeared on Breaking Bad.

What's also worth noting is that Morley's is a recurring prop in The Tommy Westphall Universe, of which The X-Files is a part. That's the shared universe containing series like Law & OrderThe X-Files and St. Elsewhere, identified by their shared characters by comic book writer Dwayne McDuffie.

...Does that mean The Walking Dead is all happening in the head of an autistic child?

  1. Actually, the last time anyone smoked on the show was when Darryl and Martinez shared a cigarettes while Rick and the Governor we're having their meeting in season 3...

  2. I hate the much ado about nothing over smoking.  What lemmings serving the will of the anti-smoker crusade.  Smoking has historically been normal.  It's gone on for hundreds of years.  The manufactured anti-smoker campaign is what's not normal -- using censorship and force of law to dictate a private legal lifestyle choice.  In order to "denormalize" smoking they've had to denormalize civil liberties.  THAT'S the NEW affront to our nation's founding principles.  With what I hate out of the way I still tip my hat to the St. Elsewhere reference.  How many people today would get it?  It's my all time favorite show.

  3. Um...Morely Cigs have been around since the original Psycho movie.

This is not an X Files shout out, literally hundreds of shows and movies have used Morelys.

    Research...its your friend.

Actually reading the article, which establishes that, is your friend.

Seriously, how would it even be possible to acknowledge that it appeared on St. Elsewhere, which ended five years before The X-Files started, and not be aware that it didn't originate with The X-Files? When you look for things to bitch about, you'll find them, I guess. Just seems like a pretty miserable existence.

  5. Yea Daryl smoked last season --- but this is about the burning of the cigarette.... going with the theme of ashes and burning and smoke
