The Associated Press is reporting that the original Cowardly Lion costume from The Wizard of Oz sold for over $3 million at auction on Monday (via ABC). The costume was sold at Bonhams in New York City.

The Cowardly Lion costume is the very one worn by Bert Lahr in the 1939 film. The face is sculpted in the likeness of the late actor.

The costume was sold by owner James Comisar, who says a secondary Cowardly Lion costume from the film sold for close to $1 million in recent years.

Comisar also sold the original piano from the movie Casablanca, fetching $3.4 million. He says he will use the money earned to display his collection of television memorabilia, which includes pieces from I Love Lucy and Lost.
