Ghostbusters Reboot to be Scarier Than the Original

It seems that the catchphrase "I ain't afraid of no ghost" won't apply to the upcoming Ghostbusters reboot.

Paul Feig, Ghostbusters director and orchestrator behind the franchise's new direction with an all-female cast, said in an interview this month that he wants his Ghostbusters to be scarier than the original's.

"I want ours to be scarier than the original, to be quite honest," Feig told Empire Magazine. "Katie Dippold and I are so focused on wanting to do scary comedy. We don't want to hold back."

But for those afraid that a darker road may make for a disingenuous Ghost Busters film shouldn't worry, Feig assured. According to the director, the horror elements will not be overly extreme, and the film will only be rated PG-13.

"The reason I do a lot of R-Rated comedies is that you want a movie to feel honest. But the Ghostbusters world doesn't need that level of swearing. We'll have to be PG-13 with this one. I would like to make it R-Rated, but I won't. You want the biggest number of people to watch it and not be put off by it."

Those brief traces of horror may be experienced more by film's cast than audience, however. Feig said that in this rebooted world, its inhabitants will grapple with the idea of ghosts existing for the first time ever. He said that the thought of continuing the world of the original Ghost Busters, in which ghosts are commonplace, seemed to pedestrian and boring.

"There's something fun about introducing our world, which has never seen ghosts to the phenomenon of ghosts. I love origin stories and to introduce new characters."

While a release date has not yet been set, Feig said that he and his team are working on the screenplay's first draft.
