The BBC will today release The Doctor and the Dalek into the Google, Amazon, and Apple app stores for tablet devices. The Doctor Who game, which features the voice of current Doctor Who star Peter Capaldi, was released online as a browser game in October 2014. As part of the BBC"s "Make it Digital" initiative, The Doctor and the Dalek attempts to teach children the skills needed for coding and programming.

The games' plot involves the Doctor's two most iconic and deadly foes, the Daleks and the Cybermen. While aboard the TARDIS, the Doctor finds a Cyber-ship under attack by a Dalek Saucer. The Doctor is surprised to hear a distress call coming from a Dalek aboard the Cyber-ship.

What begins as one of the Doctor's most bizarre rescue missions turns into one of his strangest alliances, as he and the distressed Dalek join forces on an adventure to save the universe from destruction, which takes them to never before seen locations, like the Clone Chambers of the Sontar homeworld, and classic locations, like the Cyber-tombs of Telos.

The Doctor and the Dalek was developed by BBC Wales and Somethin' Else, in association with BBC Future Media. The gameplay consists of several puzzles based on the the UK's new programming curriculum, and hopes to give kids a head start in learning to some key coding skills.

"We're really excited about the launch of The Doctor and the Dalek as not only is it a really entertaining platform game for kids to play but it's also a great introduction to some key principles of computer programing," said Sinéad Rocks, Head of BBC Learning, in a statement on the game's website. "Every puzzle has a strong link to the KS2 or KS3 computer science curriculum. So we think it's going to be a really valuable tool for students, parents and teachers."

The Doctor and the Dalek will be made available, for free, in the Google Play, Amazon, and iTunes App Stores on February 2.
