Asteroids Movie Getting Rewrite From F. Scott Frazier

Universal Pictures has tapped F.Scott Frazier to pen a new screenplay for Asteroids, a live-action film based on the Atari video game.

Frazier will pick up the draft left by previous screenwriters Matt Lopez, Evan Spiliotopoulos, and Jez Butterworth. Universal has had an Asteroids project in development since 2009, after it purchased the movie rights to the classic meteor-blasting game.

Frazier's writing resume includes The Numbers Station, a 2013 action-thriller starring Malin Ackerman (Watchmen) and John Cusack, and this year's Autobahn, a racing film starring Nicholas Holt (X-Men:Days of Future Past) and Ben Kingsley (Iron Man 3). But Frazier is no stranger to the world of video games: He has served as a crew member for numerous video game titles, including another Atari Classic—Tetris Evolution.

A movie based on Asteroid should be an interesting project for Universal. Despite being one of the most iconic games of the Atari era, it contained no overarching story, plot, or characters. Indeed, all players knew was that they commanded a spaceship that had to blast asteroids and the occasional flying saucer.
