Several days ago, Warcraft director Duncan Jones conducted an impromptu question and answer session on Twitter. During it, Jones fielded several questions regarding his upcoming Warcraft film adaptation and acknowledged some concerns he has about how best to market the film to non-gamers.

One fan wanted to know what's the balance between live-action and CGI. "I would say that we fit somewhere between Planet of the Apes, Fellowship of the Ring and Avatar," Duncan replied. Another fan suggested two parallel trailers; one focusing on the Horde and the other one focusing on the Alliance. Duncan said, "I love that idea. Have pitched it myself. We'll have to see." That would makes sense since Jones says, "Its a story told from two sides."

Clearly, marketing the film to non-gamers is the biggest challenge Duncan Jones sees on the horizon for Warcraft. Jones wants "to find the best way to let the broader audience know it's a film for them too." It is a valid concern as game-to-film adaptations don't have the best track record.

I agree with Jones that game-to-film adaptations have a "checkered past," but I believe Warcraft has a lot going for it that the other adaptations didn't. For starters, Warcraft has a super-talented director. He has directed Source Code and Moon. If you haven't seen them, do so. Secondly, I assume the film with have a fantastical look to it that will entice fans of Peter Jackson's The Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. With no matter Middle Earth adventures those fans will still want to flock to a film that satisfies that hunger for fantasy-adventure. Warcraft could fill that void.
