WB Games has released a new look at Batgirl, making her Batman Arkham universe debut in the Batgirl: A Matter of Family DLC pack for Batman: Arkham Knight.
Well, sort of debut. Barbara Gordon has been the voice in Batman's ear in Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City. A young Barbara appeared in the prequel Batman: Arkham Origins, and Oracle had an important on-screen role in Arkham Knight.
However, Batgirl: A Matter of Family is the first time players can take control of Barbara in her original vigilante persona. The DLC was developed by the team behind Arkham Origins, WB Games Montreal, and has Batgirl teaming up with Robin to rescue her father, Commissioner Jim Gordon, from the Joker.
"We wanted to recreate the feeling of being trapped in a bizarre and unique open environment playing a game of cat and mouse with the Joker," design producer Justin Vazquez tells EW.
The DLC incorporate the Dual Play mechanic from Arkham Knight, allowing players to swap between Batgirl and Robin in combat. Batgirl will pack a slightly smaller punch in combat that Batman does, but her hacking skills will allow her to pull of some tricks that even the Dark Knight isn't capable of.
Vazquez also says that players should keep an eye out of side quests, collectibles, and Easter eggs.
"[It's] a love letter to the original game that started this incredible franchise."
Batgirl: A Matter of Family will be available to Batman: Arkham Knight season pass holders on July 14, and available as a standalone download to every on July 21 for $6.99.
