Gotham Season 2: David Mazouz Says Bruce Wayne "Is Going To Be Batman"

In Gotham’s second season, The Dark Knight will finally rise.

After spending much of Gotham’s premiere season grieving his parent’s death, Bruce Wayne will truly become the hero he’s destined to be. And while he’s still years away from donning the cape and cowl, Bruce will embrace his alter ego by exploring Gotham City, teaming with Jim Gordon, and interacting with the city’s criminal element.  Becoming the Batman is no small task, but thankfully actor David Mazouz, who plays Wayne on Gotham, is more than ready for it. During this year’s San Diego Comic Con, Mazouz discussed just how Bruce will become the Caped Crusader by utilizing his allies, using the bat-cave and perfecting his trademark playboy persona.

You found the secret room (the Batcave) in the first season. How does that develop Bruce’s transformation into Batman this season?

In every way possible. Bruce’s discovery of that room in the season finale was a turning point. It’s going to touch everything in Bruce’s life. It’s going to turn the page to a different chapter in every imaginable way on his journey to becoming Batman. In season one, Bruce and Alfred were constantly butting heads, but in season two, because  of the cave, they’re going to go through a really rough patch. But one they get through it, they’re going to really start to become a team. They’re really going to have the Batman/Alfred partnership that you know.

Lucius Fox is also coming to the show, and is really going to help Bruce. Season Two is really going to be the transformation from Bruce Wayne to Batman. In season one, Bruce Wayne was grieving. He was determined, but he was determined to find out more about his parents and learn more about who his dad was, and what Wayne Enterprises was, but he wasn’t Batman. In season two, Bruce IS going to be Batman. His transformation is going to be huge in season two.

How exactly will we see this transformation?

It’s going to be through multiple things.  Bruce Wayne has multiple personas. He has Batman persona, but he also his public playboy persona to fool everyone. And moving into season two, we’ll see more of that second persona from Bruce. Another way, on the villains side, we’re going to see the villains shift from mobsters to super villains. The villains that we know in Batman are going to be the ones who take over Gotham. Penguin is at the threshold right now, but he’s going to meet people who are ten times worse. And because the threat of villains is going to be so immense, the heroes will really have to team up. So you’ll see Bruce and Gordon team up a lot more. And because of that,  Bruce will get out a lot more. Gordon is really going to start that mentorship we talked about. They’re really going to start to become closer, and because of that Bruce will find himself more involved with the crime world.

Any chance we'll hear Bruce practice his Batman voice?

[Laughs] No. My voice is still a little too high for that.

In becoming Batman, how will Bruce change his relationship with Selina?

I’m not sure, but I know that Bruce isn’t really aware of what Selina is up to right now. But if he did, he’ disprove. Like when we saw Selina kill Reggie, he stopped talking to her for a bit because he disapproved the action so much. Bruce and Selina have a certain chemistry that is unbreakable. For some reason, they both like each other. Whether that’s a brother-sister relationship, a friendship, or a romantic relationship , there’s something between the two that’s never going to change. They’re going to hit some rocky patches, but they’ll always get through it.

Will there be other characters who will influence Bruce?

It’s mainly just going to be Alfred, Bruce, and Gordon. There’ll be a little bit of Selina. The good news is, that’s mostly good people. Bruce obviously grows to become a good person, and those mentors are probably why.  His influences are going to be huge this season, because he’s still growing. He really starts to discover the world in a new light. Those influences are going to be huge, and they’re going to lead into him becoming Batman.

Gotham’s second season premieres on September 21 at 8:00 p.m. on FOX.

It seems like this should have a time frame. This can't go on too long before Bruce grows into a man and really begins the journey. Will the show just peter out in another couple of seasons or will it evolve into The Batman?

  1. looks like they have been listening to the fans. just hope it all works out

  2. Well, like the article says, he wont wear the suit but he'll be on his way to becoming Batman, they say "he IS Batman" this season as if he's already done everything needed to become him, he'd be Batkid with no suit and not being able to kick ass, he's got some time to go before all that.. plus he'd be a noob at detective work

  3. I want to see him develop that darkness Batman is known for. And have Alfred trying to nip that in the butt while also being "the butler". Bring out that double edged sword that is their relationship. Focus on how Alfred will become Bruce's father figure while also still being limited to the role of a servant. I've always found that the most exciting thing about their relationship and if the show can bring that out it will keep people watching.

The actor is starting Batman at 14 to 15 years old. It will be interesting to see the transformation as the years go by. In the comics Bruce Wayne's dad created the batsuit and some technology in the batcave under the mansion before he was assassinated. He never got a chance to use it. He may have wanted to remove the original Court of Owls and mafia investors from Wayne Enterprises. His business manufactures weapons and technology to where they can make money legally, and illegally on the black market and selling weapons to 3rd world countries doing lots of illegal business, as well as making lots of money on crime in Gotham, and they also may develop weapons and technology for NASA as well as the US military. Bruce Wayne is now operating a multi-billion dollar business that is Wayne Enterprises. Bruce Wayne may travel around the world. In an alternate reality Bruce Wayne died, and his dad Thomas Wayne became Batman who would kill his enemies with swords, guns, and grenades unlike Bruce Wayne. In another alternate reality Bruce Wayne had an older brother where Bruce Wayne died and his older brother became Owlman as apart of the original Court of Owls to join with the criminal investors. Owlman created the Crime Syndicate with Ultraman (Superman's cousin who went to Earth instead) and others where they would battle the superhero Alexander Joseph Luthor who had no super powers but had vast powers with the technology he created that's like super powers, he was a good guy in that reality. The original Court of Owls who have been around for many decades may be apart of an illegal top secret part of the government where they go really deep, and are tied into many major businesses and all kinds of businesses also with aiding the Mafia as a group of investors for legal business and illegal business. The rich people of Gotham are greedy and they keep all other classes poor, who would otherwise be middle class and upper middle class with medium to higher intelligence, so that they can make money off of the populace through mafia crime where all of the other class systems are exploited and so no other businesses could possibly compete with the higher profit companies. Bruce Wayne would go much further into the Batman technology than his dad did, to where Bruce Wayne was on a great level of inventive genius like Thomas Edison, where Bruce Wayne also got many excellent patents through his employees. That's where Bruce Wayne is an excellent entrepreneur and isn't dependent on illegal money for Wayne Enterprises being many steps ahead of his dad. His dad didn't like the illegal business either, but if he tried to defy the system his family and he would be killed as he and his wife were, and their profits would plummet. His dad also would degenerate into sort of crime himself killing in the name of justice that is illegal but he would be anti committing any crime. Owls kill bats, and so that was the theme of Thomas Wayne creating the Batman identity to combat the original Court of Owls which also explains why there's an Owlman in an alternate reality who is apart of the Crime Syndicate. Bruce Wayne may go into interesting directions with Lucius Fox, if Lucius Fox is great at technology or watching the camera system of Wayne Enterprises where he may have lots of inside information. It could be a very long process for Bruce Wayne as he gets older. Bruce Wayne joined League of Assassins when he was a young adult, where he paid them a lot of money and he wouldn't kill. He didn't follow any of their illegal business. He left with a high integrity understanding with Ra's when Bruce was still young, and Ra's still watched him as the decades passed. In the KnightFall trilogy The Sacred Order of Saint Dumas had Bruce Wayne on their assassination list as a high threat to civilization because he's a previous member of The League of Assassins. The Sacred Order of Saint Dumas was financed by the Roman Catholic Church for centuries to combat the genocidal League of Assassins and keep them from mass destruction. To think like the enemies, to figure them out, they have to be like the enemies where Sacred Order of Saint Dumas can be very cruel for incentive of profit. Ra's watched as Bruce got older where after KnightFall trilogy, Ra's wanted Bruce Wayne to join him in taking over the world by reducing the world's numbers of mass genocide with the Legacy Virus of the Wheel of Plagues. Bruce Wayne also showed how potentially dangerous he is with the Tower of Babel storyline where things can get out of hand. If Ra's Al Ghul wanted to, he could just storm Bruce Wayne's batcave with ninjas and kill Bruce Wayne a long time ago. Bruce Wayne has taken the spirit of Ra's Al Ghul to the Mystic Temple, where without knowing it would happen Ra's Al Ghul possessed a monk's body, and went into the Fountain of Essence to morph the monk's body into his own permanently. Talia Al Ghul showed Bruce Wayne they could have killed him a long time ago and still can to by surrounding Bruce Wayne with ninjas in the batcave when Bruce Wayne is much older, but Talia also had Bruce Wayne's child where some writers say Bruce Wayne consented to when Bruce Wayne was around 30 years old, and Bruce Wayne didn't find out about until after he was over 40 years old. After Bruce Wayne left the League of Assassins in his youth he was very hot headed with how he did things like in the Year One stories. From what I read the person that became Joker didn't kill anyone until the hot headed Bruce Wayne on a quest for revenge threw him in a chemical vat at the chemical factory. Joker missed the pay of the job so his pregnant wife was killed by loan sharks, and Joker became a psychopath with the Joker identity where by Joker's 50s he was responsible for over 600 homicides, and by his 60s he was responsible for over 800 homicides. Where Ra's challenged Bruce Wayne, it was Ra's reaching out to Bruce Wayne after Bruce Wayne was over 30 years old where Bruce Wayne was at the mercy of Bane to lose that challenge. Bruce Wayne got a lot better to heal his broken back, that Bane broke, with paranormal healing. Bruce Wayne was much improved when he went to get much higher teachings. He got much better into his later 30s and 40s to beyond. Bruce Wayne had some issues to work out after leaving League of Assassins, and as his Batman career progressed made better judgments to handle things he felt as more ideal. He eventually joins Justice League. That's the official comic canon story I think of all of the decades of Batman's comics. Bruce Wayne was born as a child prodigy, and he has an IQ of 190 with an eidetic memory.
