It seems that director Ridley Scott is back on track with Prometheus 2, the sequel to his 2012 Alien prequel.

While speaking on his upcoming film, The Martian, Scott said that he will begin shooting Prometheus 2 in January 2016. "I've got back into the sci-fi thing, I kind of adore it," he told Total Film Magazine.

Just last year, many thought that Scott's Prometheus follow-up would land in March 2016, but the director decided to tackle The Martain, an adaptation of Andy Weir best-selling sci-fi novel first. This put Prometheus 2 on the backburner, but it seems that Scott is ready to revisit his Alien world again.

What this means for the Neil Blomkamp-directed Alien film remains to be seen, but perhaps Fox is hoping for two separate Alien series—a prequel and a present-day story—at once. But until Fox confirms Scott's statement, it's probably best to treat this as just a possibility. It's important to remember that Scott is also attached to direct another film, The Cartel.

But good news—there's still plenty of great sci-fi movies already confirmed for 2016 and beyond. To see what films lie ahead, check out ComicBook.com's franchise movie database here!
