During the Gotham panel today at Wizard World Chicago, series star Ben McKenzie explained why it's unlikely we'll see Superman or other DC superheroes outside of the Bat-family on the show.

"[Characters] don't actually have powers on our show," McKenzie said. "There's gravity; people can't just fly around."

He said that with 75 years of Batman history to draw from, there's plenty to keep Gotham interesting without having to reach out to other parts of the DC Universe that might compromise the vision of the series, which is to establish the world of Gotham City before Batman's arrival.

Gotham starts back up on Monday, September 21, at 8 p.m. ET/PT on FOX. It will bring back a number of characters from the first season, but add new faces both familiar to comics readers and not.

The show's first season arrives on Blu-ray and DVD on September 8.
