Oscar Isaac Says Playing Apocalypse In X-Men Is Like Playing God

During a newly-released interview with Paste Magazine, X-Men: Apocalypse villain Oscar Isaac spoke a little bit about the challenges of playing the title role in the forthcoming superhero film.

Asked about his recent choice to move from the arthouse movies where he's made a reputation for himself into big-budget blockbusters, Isaac had an answer that was pretty down to earth.

"For me, more than anything, it was about being guilty of nostalgia. I was a big fan of Star Wars. I was also a big fan of X-Men, particularly the villain Apocalypse," Isaac explained. "So when those parts came around and there was interest for me to do them, I was excited about it. I was excited to explore those worlds. There is something more mythical … basically, you're playing God. It's a challenge."

Apocalypse is an ancient evil in the comics, and one of the X-Men's most powerful foes. It would be easy to see him more as The Devil than God, but in the morally-gray world of the X-Men, it's rare that villains see themselves as villains.

X-Men: Apocalypse is being directed by Bryan Singer (X-Men: Days of Future Past), based on a script written by Simon Kinberg (Fantastic Four). The cast includes Jennifer Lawrence, Olivia Munn, Rose Byrne, Michael Fassbender, Sophie Turner, Oscar Isaac, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Nicholas Hoult, Evan Peters, James McAvoy, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Lucas Till, Ben Hardy, Josh Helman and Lana Condor.
