Channing Tatum's forthcoming X-Men franchise spinoff Gambit, which recently lost its director, may be calling in some high-profile help from The Bourne Identity and Edge of Tomorrow helmer Doug Liman.

The filmmaker, who was once considered for Watchmen, has sometimes circled comic book properties but hasn't actually landed on one yet.

Of course, with movies like Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Jumper in his resume, it's not hard to argue he's up to at least the action bits.

Deadline says Liman has "an inside track" on the film. At the same time, TheWrap seems satisfied with the rumors with Jeff Sneider tweeting that he's heard Tatum is personally courting Liman.

Liman is already in post-production on one film and attached to at least one more, with rumors indicating that he's got an Edge of Tomorrow sequel he's considering too.
