The Hollywood Reporter published an article in which they claim Universal Pictures bankrolled By The Sea — the box office disaster that was written, directed and starred Angelina Jolie, along with her husband Brad Pitt — in hopes of coaxing Jolie to star in Bride of Frankenstein and the sequel to 2008's Wanted.

"But even if Universal loses tens of millions of dollars on By the Sea, the studio is gambling that by backing Jolie Pitt's artistic whim, she will be amenable to starring in its tentpole Bride of Frankenstein," THR reports, "which is part of the Monster's universe from producers Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan, or a long-hoped-for sequel to Wanted."

Wanted, which was based on Mark Millar and J.G. Jones' comic book mini-series, starred Jolie as Fox, a veteran member of the Fraternity and Wesley's (James McAvoy) mentor. Her character died at the end of the film when she let her own curving bullet go through her noggin. The film grossed $340M at the worldwide box office and ever since Universal has made attempts to move forward with a sequel, but can't seem to pull the trigger on it without resurrecting Jolie's character.

As for Bride of Frankenstein, that's a horror classic from 1935 that was directed by James Whale and starred Boris Karloff as Frankenstein's monster and Elsa Lanchester as his reluctant mate. Lancaster also appeared in a second role: Mary Shelley.
