To the surprise of basically no one, Star Wars: The Force Awakens has become the fastest film to reach the $300 million mark at the domestic box office.

Given that it broke opening day, Thursday, opening weekend and first Monday records -- and that the film took in nearly $250 million over the weekend alone -- it's not surprising. The previous record-holder made about $40 million less during its opening frame, so it would have needed huge advance (Thursday) and Monday numbers to get even close.

THR reports that the sequel to Return of the Jedi finished Monday with just north of $288 million after a $40.1 million Monday haul.

The previous record was Jurassic World, which crossed $300 million in eight days.

By the end of today, the film may or may not break the current record for a first Tuesday, currently held by The Amazing Spider-Man with $35 million. That movie opened on Tuesday, July 3, 2012.
