Rumors about the next Assassin's Creed game are an annual affair, but the latest say that might no longer be the case. These rumors, which originated from the 4chan message boards, and thus should be taken with a pile of salt, say that the next Assassin's Creed won't hit in fall 2016, breaking from the annual release schedule, instead being pushed to an undisclosed timeframe in 2017.

The next game is also rumored to be set in Egypt. Both rumors were corroborated to Kotaku by other sources.

For now, the only officially announced Assassin's Creed products for 2016 include more of the Assassin's Creed Chronicles side-scrolling adventures, set in India and Russia, releasing in January and February 2016, and the live action movie starring Michael Fassbender as an all-new assassin set in the universe established by the games so far.

When ComicBook.com reached out to Ubisoft for comment on the rumors, they provided us with this official statement:

"We can't comment on rumor or speculation. We're always happy when players are excited about our games, past, present and future. In the meantime, we hope that the latest images from the Assassin's Creed movie set will keep fans of the franchise happy and eager to find out more!"

The most recent game, Assassin's Creed: Syndicate debuted in Fall 2015 to critical success, with critics and fans agreeing the back-to-basics and single-player-only format of the game brought a much-needed change to the franchise. The previous game for new-gen consoles, Unity, was released with bugs and problems that prevented many players from getting through it, with the high level of multiplayer being cited as a possible reason for those problems sneaking through to release.

See why we named Assassin's Creed: Syndicate one of the top five videogames of 2015 here, and stay tuned for more on the future of the franchise.
