The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences might be notoriously shy about awarding populist, big-money movies like the kind of blockbusters we typically cover here, but Star Wars: The Force Awakens managed to pull out a few nominations this week.

The result? Star Wars is now tied for the most nominations ever for a franchise.

Mashable counted them up and came to thirty total nominations (including this year's five) for Star Wars, matching the number of nominations for Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings movies.

Of course, Lord of the Rings was only three movies, and when you add in The Hobbit, that's another 8 nominations...so I guess it's a good thing that there will be new Star Wars every year from now until you and I are all dust.

Star Wars as a series has 10 wins, though, which doesn't even match The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King's 11 wins in 2004. That film is tied with Titanic and Ben-Hur for most total wins at the Oscars.
