DreamWorks' Ghost in the Shell has been removed from Disney's release schedule, and picked up by Paramount Pictures, one of the film co-financiers.

Ghost in the Shell is based on Masmune Shirow's classic cyberpunk manga, which was adapted into an anime film in 1995. The manga has seen multiple television and film spinoffs since then.

Scarlett Johansson has been cast in the lead role. She will play a cyborg special ops agent and leader of Section 9, an organization tasked with handling cybercrime and cyberterrorism in a world where nearly every individual has some kind of cybernetic implant. Her team will be forced to deal with the brilliant and mysterious terrorist known only as The Laughing Man.

Johansson will reteam with Lucy co-star Pilou Asbæk in the film. Ghost in the Shell is being directed by Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman), and is still set for a March 31, 2017 release.
