Deadpool is now projected to gross over $90 million at the box office over the long holiday weekend.
This number is up from earlier projections of $65-70 million. Some high estimates even suggest $100 million is a possibility.
That puts the film in the company of Marvel Studios heavyweights like Guardians of the Galaxy ($94.3 million) and Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($95 million). See how they compare at ComicBook's top grossing movies page.
Based upon Marvel Comics' most unconventional anti-hero, Deadpool tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.
Deadpool is directed by Tim Miller, with a screenplay by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, and stars Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, Ed Skrein, T. J. Miller, Gina Carano, Brianna Hildebrand, Stefan Kapičić, and Leslie Uggams.
Deadpool opens in theaters today.
