You knew it was coming, but now we have a first look and a name to go with it.

Spoilers To Follow

Not even death can keep him down. That is what fans of Gotham will be saying when James Frain returns to the series later this month. Heavy speculation that he would in fact be returning as Azrael was pretty much confirmed when shots of him on set surfaced in a costume that is very reminiscent of his comic origins.

When ComicBook.com spoke to John Stephens, Gotham's executive producer, earlier this month, he talked a bit about their handling of Azrael.

"In many respects, Azrael will have many of the hallmarks and traits that we know from the comics," he said. "But it will have a brand-new twist upon that character; the way we're going to bring that character into being on our show will be different than anything we've seen in the comics."

From the photos, it looks like that statement rings true, at least from a costume and look standpoint. The sword on his back isn't on fire, but Stephens didn't say it wasn't going to happen, just couldn't confirm it was. Take a look at the photos (via The Dailymail) and let us know what you think about the look!

Most of the series is straying from the comics, so why not this character as well?

  1. Awesome. I'm adult enough to accept the changes from the comics. Some people are not. Sucks for them because their missing out on a fantastic show.

'because their missing out on a fantastic show'

It's very much suitable that you misspelled 'they're' in the same sentence where you're actually trying to call Gotham a fantastic show. Now, if you were "adult enough"(which doesn't make sense by the way) to realize that you cannot stray away so much from the comics that undermines what these characters mean to Batman and vice versa, then you will understand and acknowledge why people decide to not watch such a terrible show.  It's much more complicated than just being different just for the sake.  These characters means a lot to the pysche of Batman, whereas they mean nothing to the psyche of a young Bruce Wayne or a detective James Gordon and it has more to do than being a fan of being faithful to the comics.

i thought the show was supposed to be about how Bruce grows up to become Batman, and how the other characters became who they are in modern days as well. I thought that Azrael was supposed to be younger than Batman, or the same age. Wait, didn't penguin kill this character whom they are turning into Azrael?

If you were paying any attention to the show, then you would know that Indian Hill is bringing people back from the dead.
