Paramount has announced that it will be releasing a Transformers spinoff film starring Bumblebee. The movie is slated for June 8th of 2018, and will not be helmed by franchise maestro (or destroyer if you read the internet) Michael Bay.

The film will be released in between Transformers 5 and 6, and will be shot at a lower cost than the main franchise. CEO of Paramount Brad Grey communicated this to The Hollywood Reporter.

"There are characters in the 'Transformers' universe that can be and should be made into their own movies.

We've brought in a pretty strong writing staff run by Akiva Goldsman, and they have put together eight or nine interesting stories," said Grey. "So, between that group and Steven Spielberg's guidance on a story level, these characters are a big business for us to pursue."

While the general consensus of the franchise amongst fans is a bit negative, Transformers still continues to sell out theaters, so the decision to expand out is of no surprise. As for leading characters, starting with Bumblebee makes complete sense, and the truth is if the films are done right there is a lot to be excited about. Sign me up for a Rodimus Prime and RC centered flick any day of the week. I'm probably the only one on that front though.
