What's the deal with Felicity's missing ring in those Arrow flash-forwards? Even series star Emily Bett Rickards doesn't know -- or at least didn't when she performed the scene in the mid-season premiere.

Revealing that the script specified a lack of a ring, Rickards told TVLine that it was a balancing act, playing a scene that was so fraught, when she diesn't know what it all meant but she obviously had to play a version of Felicity that did.

"It literally said in the script, 'NO RING,' and I was like, 'OK…,'" Rickarsds said. "Filming that scene, we knew virtually nothing about what it really was about. Your character knows what's going on but as an actor you don't, so it was about trying to get as much information from the writers and potentially where this story is headed…. Everything's going to make sense in the end, but at the same time, I found filming that eighth of a page to be very… I couldn't stress myself out about it, but I found it difficult. Because I like to know what the authenticity is."

"The scene wasn't about the ring," she added. "And yet the ring fills this underlying space in the middle between them."

She also said that she was impressed by fans who speculate that Felicity could actually be dead in that scene and "haunting" Oliver a la visions he's previously seen of Tommy and Shado. Admitting she hadn't thought of it herself, Rickards said it allows her to watch the finished scene in a different light.

Arrow airs Wednesday nights at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
