Sony Reviving Spider-Man Spinoff Venom Movie

Sony reportedly has plans to revive it's once scrapped plans for a Venom film.

According to a new report, it looks like the Spider-Man sized hole in Sony's ongoing film plan is getting some new life. Dante Harper is being tasked to write up a new script for Venom which is being seen as a franchise that stands alone from the upcoming Tom Holland Spider-Man film. As for which Venom the movie will feature, that is still unknown at this time.

Venom has it's roots back in 1988 as a character created by David Micheline, Mike Zeck & Todd McFarlane. Often viewed as a villain, Venom has been seen as an anti-hero as of late and most recently, a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy.

The first and only time we saw Venom on screen was during Spider-Man 3 portrayed by Topher Grace, and was an outing that saw very little critical acclaim. The idea of a Venom movie is not a surprise and actually one Sony tried to get off the ground a few times. There were talks of Gary Ross and Josh Trank coming on board to direct. Even the Deadpool writing team of Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese had a script in the works.

With all that said, it looks like this new series of movies (if successful) will not have the participation of Marvel Studios like Spider-Man will. Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are reportedly on as producers.

Having a Venom film franchise not set in the same universe as Tom Holland's Spider-Man sounds like a pretty stupid move to me, and I don't imagine it's gonna work out for them too well.

I had a long and thoughtful comment written out, but a site glitch ate it, so I'll just tread backwards and go, "this is going to suck."

  1. There goes Sony, repeating the same mistakes they made in ASM2: Blowing their whole wad too early. Do they have any concept of what 'pacing yourself' means?

Whatever they do, I just don't want to see them waste Flash Thompson yet. He needs to be near Parker's age and right now that's too young for a Flash Venom. Save that character for later on if the Spider-man movies do well towards the end of the run when Parker is older. Then they can come in with a strong Flash/Venom and go into an Agent Venom run.
