Star Ocean is making its current generation console debut with the wonderfully titled Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness. Good luck trying to extract a plot from that title.
The newest trailer, revealed at Jump Festa, gives us a little insight as to what the feel of the game will be. Star Ocean has always blended fantasy elements and worlds within a science fiction framework, and this latest entry looks no different. I happen to be a huge fan of the series, though the last iteration, Star Ocean: The Last Hope, was severely underwhelming. This entry takes place on an underdeveloped planet named Faykreed, and revolves around Fidel Camuze, his childhood friend Miki Sauvester, and a young girl named Relia, who is much more than she seems.
As you can see, the graphics are a bit more stylized and less advanced than Square Enix's other big franchise, but I don't tend to mind. At least the series looks like it belongs on a current gen console now, something the last entry lacked. This is also the first time we get to hear the English voice actors, and overall they are quite good, though the English-speaking animations don't seem to be in yet, so there are some awkward moments regarding the speech.
The combat system has always been where this franchise shined, with quick action paced combat and handling your team's coordination on the fly. Things look like they are on the same trajectory in this game, but only time will tell.
Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness is slated for release in North America this year.
