Sony Pictures Animation is moving forward with animated Ghostbusters movie, and the studio has signed Clash of Clans commercial director Fletcher Moules to helm the film.
The animated feature is part of Sony’s plan to turn the long dormant comedy series into a tent pole franchise. The push begins with Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters live action film, but Sony has assembled a creative collective called Ghost Corps, led by original Ghostbusters veterans Ivan Reitman and Dan Aykroyd, to expand the concept into a cinematic universe. There is also a second live action feature in development, starring Channing Tatum and to be directed by Captain America: Civil War’s Joe and Anthony Russo.
Reitman will serve as producer on the animated feature. Fletcher has worked for AMC and in the creature department of Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, but is best known for his Clash of Clans commercials. The ads for the mobile game are popular on YouTube, garnering up to 90 million views.
Ghostbusters have been seen in animated form before. In 1986, DiC Enterprises premiered The Real Ghostbusters, an animated series following the original Ghosbusters from the 1984 film. The series ran until 1991.
