During a new interview in support of Captain America: Civil War, Iron Man actor Robert Downey, Jr. praised James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy, saying that it helped to expand the Marvel Universe tonally.

"Gunn spun everything in a whole other different way where it's like, wow, without even trying to, that took a little bit of the real estate out of some tonal stuff we were doing so we don't want to fight that," Downey told USA Today. "We want to give way to that. We want to yield to that kind of powerful dynamic that they created and just go, 'Hey, that's great. You know what, we're going to widen the track here and we're going to stay in this lane, and then we'll see when it's time to switch lanes again.'"

With Captain America: Civil War up next on the agenda, of course, it's going to be interesting to see where those tonal influences are felt, if at all. The comic from which Civil War is adapted is fairly dark and dour, and thus far, all of the promotions for the film have had the very serious feel of Captain America: The Winter Soldier to them.

Marvel's "Captain America: Civil War" finds Steve Rogers leading the newly formed team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. But after another incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability, headed by a governing body to oversee and direct the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers, resulting in two camps—one led by Steve Rogers and his desire for the Avengers to remain free to defend humanity without government interference, and the other following Tony Stark's surprising decision to support government oversight and accountability.
