Spoilers follow for the Preacher pilot, set to air in May on AMC.

Following a screening of the Preacher pilot at SXSW this weekend, EW reports that one of the episode's surprises is what happens to noted Church of Scientology adherent Tom Cruise.

The movie star is among a number of religious figures who reportedly explode while preaching to their respective followers in the first episode of the series based on Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon's acclaimed Vertigo comic.

In the comics, series lead Jesse Custer's church exploded and burned down around him, but he didn't die: instead, he was infused with the power of God. According to EW, it's aliens who are causing the deaths of religious leaders on the TV series -- a major change from the comics, and one seemingly designed to minimize the controversy the comics so often courted.

Preacher is based on Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon's 1990s Vertigo Comics series. The comic series followed a Texas preacher, Jesse Custer, who became possessed by a heavenly entity. Custer decides to hold God, who has gone missing, accountable for everything he's allowed to happen, and sets off on to search for the delinquent deity with his girlfriend, Tulip, and vampire best friend, Cassidy.

The AMC Preacher series is executive produced by Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and Sam Caitlin. The series stars Dominic Cooper as Jesse Custer, Joseph Gilgun as Cassidy, and Ruth Negga as Tulip.

The series will debut on Monday, May 22 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on AMC.
