Starz has cast Emily Browning as Laura Moon in American Gods.

Based on Neil Gaiman's acclaimed fantasy novel, American Gods follows ex-convict Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle) as he takes a job with the mysterious Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane) and ends up caught in a war between old gods and new gods.

Laura is Shadow's wife who has been waiting for Shadow to be released from prison. She doesn't realize that her actions and Shadow's release will lead her on an entirely unexpected journey.

Browning received a Critics Choice nomination for Best Young Actress for her performance as Violet in 2004's film adaptation of A Series of Unfortunate Events. Her credits also include Sucker Punch, Legend, Ghost Ship, Ned Kelly, Pompeii and Magic Mike.

"I've been fascinated by Emily Browning since A Series of Unfortunate Events. She has a challenge ahead of her: Laura is a tricky character, and the Laura on the screen is even trickier and more dangerous than the one on the page. She's going to have a wonderful time bringing Laura to life," Gaiman said.

Production on American Gods is set to begin in April.
