Deadpool Kevin Smith

Upon first viewing, Director Kevin Smith wasn't too keen on Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, though that has softened after multiple viewings.

The first time around, however, it was apparent he disliked more about the film than he enjoyed, and during his and Ralph Garman's Hollywood Babble-On podcast he spoke about how dark it was in comparison to Marvel films, even compared to Deadpool.

"It's missing joy," Smith continued. "The Marvel movies have a lot of joy in them and I realize as I was watching [BVS] and here's the weirdest way to sum it up: I thought it was really dark, I don't know that I would take a kid to this, it's kinda bleak. And I'm not a p**** about this — 'oh kids shouldn't see violence'— and I'll give you an example. I've seen 'Deadpool' twice. I would take a nine-year old to see 'Deadpool,' … More so than that, the moral of Deadpool is crystal clear: It's not what you look on the outside, its who you are on the inside. It's kinda of a beautiful story…there's something there that you can grab onto… It's been 72 hours since I've seen it and I don't know what the moral of the 'Batman v Superman' movie is other than, maybe, maybe, if you stretch it real thin, 'Hey kids, don't judge a book by its cover.' "

While there are sentiments I agree with in his initial analysis of the film, I wouldn't go as far as he does in regards to Deadpool. I loved Deadpool, but I wouldn't show it to my nine-year-old, regardless of how mature they might be. They might not get all the adult themes sure, but there is enough violence and other stuff in it that I'd let them sit it out until they're a bit older. Granted, I also wouldn't take a child to see Batman V Superman either, so there's that.

While I disagree with the premise, I'm not criticising his parenting choice. He can choose to do what he wants, and more power to him. I'm just saying I wouldn't do the same.
