20th Century Fox's X-Men movie franchise is currently riding high on the success of Deadpool, and barreling towards the premiere of X-Men: Apocalypse. Meanwhile, The Fault in Our Stars director Josh Boone is plugging away at the script for the upcoming spinoff film The New Mutants. Producer Simon Kinberg offered an update on the status of that film.

"Josh Boone and his writing partner are working on the script," Kinberg tells IGN. "They're doing a really nice job of it, and it's a really cool one, because in many ways, like Deadpool was so different from the mainline X-Men movies, New Mutants… It's maybe not as different as Deadpool, but it has its own unique, original voice to it.

"That's the fun for me," Kinberg continues, "working in the X-Men universe, creating these sort of standalone movies that have a different vibe to them. And New Mutants has more of a YA [Young Adult] vibe to it."

Fans of Marvel's mutants are likely wondering which characters will be featured in the film. Kinberg says they have plenty to choose from. "There's a very deep bench," he says. "There's a long, long list of names, and I'll tell you some of the names on that list I don't even know. That's how deep it goes."

A few New Mutants characters have appeared in previous X-Men movie, most notably Warpath and Sunspot in X-Men: Days of Future Past. There's also Professor X, who was the team's original mentor, and Magneto, who took over when Xavier was believed dead. Kinberg says crossover is a definite possibility.

"Traditionally, the New Mutants have some characters that cross over from the mainline X-Men movies," he said. "As we are going, I would say it's likely that you will see some familiar faces."

While not a member of the New Mutants himself, Colossus has a very personal connection to the team in his sister, Illyanna Rasputin, a.k.a. Magik. While Kinberg wouldn't say anything definitive about her inclusion in the New Mutants movie, he did say of Magik that, "It's a great role… It would be a great role to cast."
