Batman V Superman Looking At Huge Second Week Drop at the Box Office

With poor reviews and a massive opening weekend, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice was expected to drop significantly at the box office in its second frame -- but it looks like a nearly 70% drop may be in the cards, according to new projections at THR.

Throughout the week and going into the weekend, a number of sources projected smaller drops, but THR's newest numbers are apparently the most up-to-date yet.

Expectations were that the film would drop between 60% and 70% this weekend; a great holdover for a movie this huge is generally about a 50% drop, while 60-65% are somewhat more common, having been seen in a number of recent blockbusters.

The high fifties to about 60%, though, is the norm for big superhero movies, which have a big repeat audience. Batman V Superman itself is trending at 30% higher on repeat purchases than the average blockbuster at Fandango, suggesting that the film's biggest problem at this point may be winning over anybody who was already on the fence about going.

Of course, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2 dropped a whopping 72 percent in its second weekend. That film, with the biggest domestic opening weekend of any Warner Bros. release in history, is likely a bar by which Batman V Superman -- which narrowly missed taking the "biggest opening" title -- is being measured.
