Toby Jones has been cast as the villain in the fourth series of Sherlock. He will make his debut in the second episode of the three-episode series.

Jones will play opposite stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, who play Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson, respectively.

"I'm excited and intrigued by the character I shall be playing in Sherlock," Jones told the BBC.

"Delighted to have Toby Jones on board, bringing to life one of [Arthur Conan] Doyle's finest villains," said series co-creator Steven Moffat.

"We're thrilled to welcome one of our finest actors to the Sherlock family," added co-creator Mark Gatiss. "I know Toby will embrace the part with true relish!"

Jones is a veteran actor who played the Marvel Cinematic Universe version of classic villain Arnim Zola in Captain America: The First Avenger, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and in Agent Carter. He also appeared in The Hunger Games and on Doctor Who, and provided the voice of Dobby in the Harry Potter movies and of Aristides Silk in The Adventures of Tintin.

The fourth series of Sherlock began filming on Monday. The new series sees Sherlock returning home while Watson and wife Mary (Amanda Abbington) prepare to have a child.
