Following the success The Secret Life of Pets this summer, Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures have launched development on a sequel currently set for release on July 13, 2018.

Illumination Entertainment founder and CEO Chris Meladandri and longtime collaborator Janet Healy will producer The Secret Life of Pets sequel, which will come on the heels of a record breaking $104.3 million opening weekend for the original. Chris Renaud will direct once again and Brian Lynch will return to write the script.

Since its release on July 8, The Secret Life of Pets has hauled in over $400 million worldwide with $300 million coming in domestically. It opened at the top spot in 18 markets and will launch in 48 more territories, including China this Tuesday.

For their fifth fully-animated feature-film collaboration, Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures present The Secret Life of Pets, a comedy about the lives our pets lead after we leave for work or school each day. Comedy superstars Louis C.K., Eric Stonestreet and Kevin Hart make their animated feature-film debuts in The Secret Life of Pets, which co-stars Jenny Slate, Ellie Kemper, Lake Bell, Dana Carvey, Hannibal Buress, Bobby Moynihan, Steve Coogan and Albert Brooks. Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri and his longtime collaborator Janet Healy produce the film directed by Chris Renaud (Despicable Me, Despicable Me 2), co-directed by Yarrow Cheney and written by Cinco Paul & Ken Daurio and Brian Lynch.

The Secret Life of Pets is now playing in theaters.
