Fear the Walking Dead made its midseason return on Sunday night to a smaller audience than expected.

The AMC series, which had 6.7 million viewers during its season 2 premiere in April and 4.4 million tuning in for its first-half finale in May, pulled in an audience of 3.9 million viewers on Sunday night.

By comparison, Fear the Walking Dead doesn't come close to The Walking Dead's audience. The midseason 6 premiere of The Walking Dead hauled in 13.98 million viewers and its season finale earned 14.19 million pairs of eyeballs. Going back to its second season, to keep comparisons more equal, The Walking Dead's midseason 2 premiere still more than doubled Fear's with 8.10 million viewers.

In Fear the Walking Dead's defense, it did have some strong competition on Sunday night. The 2016 Olympic Games closed out their events from Rio on NBC. All things considered, Fear the Walking Dead was the top rated cable series of the week, paralleling Rizzoli & Isles who also earned 3.9 million viewers.

Fear the Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9 PM ET on AMC. For quick updates and photos from all things The Walking Dead - panels, set, and other insider info - follow @BrandonDavisBD on Twitter and check out The Walking Dead on ComicBook.com's Facebook page!
