We recently reported that Director Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Edge of Tomorrow) was officially brought on board DC and Warner Bros. upcoming Dark Universe, also known as the theatrical version of Justice League Dark.

That left fans wondering about his other much talked about but oft-delayed project Gambit, but sources close to the movie are telling THR that Liman is no longer attached to the project, in what is being described as a "mutual parting of ways."

According to those same sources, Twentieth Century Fox is still eyeing a January start date for production, and will continue on with Josh Zetumer writing the script. Actor Channing Tatum is still officially attached to the beleaguered project, along with producers Simon Kinberg and Reid Carolin.

The film has been delayed several times at this point, and was originally pushed back in 2015 after Rupert Wyatt left as Director. After a few different rewrites of the script, Liman came on in 2015, but then the film was delayed again, Liman turned his attention towards the Amazon Studios production The Wall.

Now the film is on the hunt for yet another Director, and it starts to bring into question if this will ever really see the light of day. At this point, it might be better to relaunch the core X-Men franchise and just introduce the character there, but guess we'll have to wait and see.
