Is Fear The Walking Dead Really Introducing Immunity To The Zombie Infection?

Warning! Spoilers for the Los Muertos episode of Fear The Walking Dead to follow.

There were some big moments in the Los Muertos episode of Fear The Walking Dead. The biggest of these, however, was definitely the revelation that newcomer Alejandro had allegedly been bitten by a walker. If this turns out to be true, this will have incredible implications in The Walking Dead Universe.

Ever since the debut of The Walking Dead comics in 2003, it's been a fact that a bite from a walker is an instant death sentence. The only way to get rid of the disease is to cut off the infected limb instantly, but even then you've got a slim chance of making it. If Alejandro is truly bitten, his survival means one of two things: there's either a cure or some people are immune to the disease. If one of those options turns out to be true, that could change things for not only the folks in Mexico, but also for Rick and his crew.

Fear the Walking Dead producer Dave Erickson is aware of the pressure while diving into such a story line.

"He already had this admiration, and his following, and people who gravitated towards him as a community leader," Erickson says of Alejandro. "The story of the bite is something that has galvanized this community and really drawn them that much closer because they believe there's something, to say the least, something special about him. Yeah, there's a very specific story line that's going to play out and it has a lot to do with questions of faith, and questions of trust, and specifically Nick's relationship with his new father figure."

Notice: While Erickson discussed what the bite would mean for the show's mythology, he said nothing about Alejandro actually being immune or introducing a cure to the infection in the world of The Walking Dead.

"[Nick]'s looking for a father figure just to an extent," Erickson says. "The bite, and the sort of cultured personality that's risen around the bite is something that Nick is honestly a little bit skeptical of. I think he isn't somebody who trusts immediately. He's not somebody who is going to embrace. He doesn't take things at face value."

In addition to Erickson, actress Danay Garcia, who plays Luciana, had some thoughts on this idea. In an exclusive Comicbook.com's Walking Dead insider Brandon Davis, Garcia was asked about Luciana's thoughts on Alejandro's mystery.

"I, as Luciana, trust him."

She went on to add more about her character's thoughts on the powerful leader and his pull with La Colonia's people.

"There's a beautiful speech that will be in coming episodes that will explain why that is and why I stand by him as Luciana. She's a leader too. She's someone who also gives hope in La Colonia."

Luciana seems to be behind Alejandro 100%, but our own Brandon Davis isn't entirely convinced.

"Personally, I'm not buying it what Alejandro is selling," Davis says. "We've seen people lie about cures on The Walking Dead to help find themselves protection. As a pharmacist, Alejandro would be equipped for finding a cure better than most but he is probably lacking the skills to physically fight off threats face to face. Rallying the Tijuana community behind his fables of immunity is a great way to earn a following which would protect him in for the apocalyptic threats."

If Alejandro is lying, it wouldn't be the first time a major character has lied their way into power. In The Walking Dead, Eugene told Abraham he knew of a cure in DC in order to gain the strong man's protection.

If he isn't lying, however, could Fear The Walking Dead be setting up a story-line similar to The Last of Us? The Playstation exclusive game followed Ellie and Joel on a country-wide adventure to deliver a cure to the zombie infection. Ellie, just a small girl in the game, was the only person known to be immune to an undead bite. The game was an enormous hit among fans, and this could be a huge turn in the story of Fear The Walking Dead that would have audiences in a frenzy.

Whether this revelation is true or false, it sets up Alejandro as a powerful cult leader for the people of Tijuana. it could also mean that he could be the key to fixing the entire universe. Does this mean Rick or Carl could be immune as well? Could a character that we thought had turned in The Walking Dead still be alive? This also means Abraham's journey from Atlanta to Washington DC could have taken his mission in the complete wrong direction. They thought the cure was in the nations capital, but could it have been in Tijuana all along?
