Moulin Rogue

Moulin Rogue! will take it's stylistic love story to the stage.

The film on which the play is based was released back in 2001 and was directed by Baz Luhrmann. For the play adaptation, the team at Global Creatures brought on Writer John Logan (Skyfall, Gladiator) and Director Alex Timbers (Peter and the Starcatcher, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson). The film will look to match the pacing and frenetic energy of Luhrmann's work, which should not be as challenging since the company has worked on Luhrmann material previously in Strictly Ballroom (via Variety).

Luhrmann couldn't be happier, praising the director for his "creative spirit" and calling the writer "gifted" in an official statement. "It's immensely gratifying to know that a new wave of artists will be leading Moulin Rouge! into its rightful theatrical realm," he said.

As of now the project has just recently started development, so no release date or target date has been announced.

The original film centers around Christian (Ewan McGregor), a young writer in Paris who stumbles upon The Moulin Rogue. It's where he meets the number one attraction Satine (Nichole Kidman), and that attraction puts him on the bad side of The Duke (Richard Roxburgh). The film ushered in a renaissance of sorts for the musical genre in Hollywood and was the first of its ilk to even be nominated for an Oscar since the original Beauty and the Beast. It eventually took home Oscars for Best Art Direction and Set Decoration as well as Best Costume Design.
