Instead of an opening sketch, Saturday Night Live started with a statement and song from country singer Jason Aldean, who was performing at Route 91 Harvest Festival during the Las Vegas shootings.

According to PopCulture.com, Aldean said, "Like everyone, I'm struggling to understand what happened that night, and how to pick up the pieces and start to heal. So many people are hurting. There are children, parents, brothers, sisters, friends — they're all part of our family. So I want to say to them: We hurt for you, and we hurt with you."

Aldean performed the Tom Petty song, "I Won't Back Down." Petty passed away earlier this week.

During her opening monologue, Gal Gadot announced that Saturday Night Live was being broadcast in her native Israel for the first time in history. Gadot also noted that most people likely knew her from playing the DC Comics character Wonder Woman.

Saturday Night Live regular Leslie Jones, wearing a Wonder Woman costume, joined Gadot on stage. Jones introduced herself as the Times Square Wonder Woman. Gadot and Jones then compared the difference between their two versions of Wonder Woman. Gadot stated her Wonder Woman had bracelets to stop bullets, while Jones said her Wonder Woman had a bracelet that tells the paramedics what her blood type is. Gal Gadot made her debut as Wonder Woman in Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016. Earlier this year, Gadot starred in the Wonder Woman movie, which was the highest grossing movie of the Summer. Later this year, Gadot will reprise her role as Wonder Woman in the Justice League movie.
