Marvel Ends Its Open Submissions Policy

Marvel Comics announced today in an open press release that it would no longer accept unsolicited submissions of work from aspiring comic book artists and writers. In recent months, Marvel has been flooded with submissions and has been unable to keep up with the review demand. The new change in procedure marks the end of an era, as the company was the last major publisher to accept open submissions of work.

With the change, Marvel plans to review how the company will accept future submissions and promises to continue recruiting young talent through its Talent Management Department. The company will continue to monitor the Indy comics scene for raw talent. Marvel Talent Coordinator Chris Allo added that the publisher will scour Internet sites such as Deviant Art and other blogs devoted to comic book art, as cyberspace has become an important resource for discovering new talent.

Aspiring artists who cruise the convention circuits in hopes of making their big break shouldn’t panic. Marvel Comics will continue its practice of reviewing portfolios at major conventions in which the publisher actively participates.

Marvel will announce submission policy changes after a company audit involving standard operating procedures of talent recruiting is completed.
