The Dark Knight Top Ten

What are the top 10 greatest comic book movies ever made? While everyone likely has their own personal favorite comic book movie, Comicbook.com has compiled a list of what we think are the best.

1. The Dark Knight – Not only the best comic book movie ever made, but one of the best movies ever made. The Dark Knight should have been nominated for Best Picture, and the outrage was so strong when it wasn’t that it spurred the Academy to increase the number of nominated pictures the following year. At least, Heath Ledger won Best Supporting Actor for a performance that raised the bar for acting in a comic book movie.
Iron Man Top Ten2. Iron Man – The crowd at the San Diego Comic Con cheered when they saw the footage, and for good reason. Robert Downey, Jr. nailed his performance as Tony Stark, and Jon Favreau delivered a funny, fast-paced, and visually stunning Iron Man. Iron Man validated Marvel Studios as a force to be reckoned with in the industry.

Superman the Movie Top Ten3. Superman the Movie – We’re talking about the classic 1978 version not the remake. Sure, the special effects might seem dated now, but back then, it made moviegoers believe a man could fly. For many, Christopher Reeve will always be Superman. If not for Superman, we might not have all the comic book movies we have today.

Batman Begins Top Ten4. Batman Begins – With Batman Begins, Christopher Nolan breathed new life into a Batman franchise that everyone thought George Clooney had killed. Christian Bale proved to be the perfect Batman, and Christopher Nolan delivered the Batman movie that comic book fans had always dreamed about.

The Road to Perdition Top Ten5. Road to Perdition – The best comic book movie ever made without a superhero in it. Tom Hanks, Paul Newman, multiple Academy Award nominations, and an Oscar for Best Cinematography. Both violent and heartfelt, the Road to Perdition was a classic based on a Max Allan Collins graphic novel.

X-Men First Class Top Ten6. X-Men: First Class – Who would have thought that a movie that many had low expectations about would prove to be the best X-Men movie ever? Even though some were upset by the liberties the film took in re-writing X-men history, X-Men: First Class proved to be a riveting period piece.

Spider-Man 2 Top Ten7. Spider-Man 2 – The first Spider-Man movie with Tobey Maguire was a worthy start to the Spider-Man film franchise, but things really got hopping with the sequel. From beginning to end, Spider_man 2 is one of the most solid and enjoyable comic book movies of all.

300 Top Ten8. 300 – Like the first Superman movie, 300 broke new ground in the art of filmmaking. Never before had a comic book movie so breathtakingly adapted print pages to the big screen. There was never a dull moment in 300, as the action was non-stop excitement.

X2 Top Ten9. X2: X-Men United – Before there was first class, X2 was the comic book movie by which all other superhero team movies would be judged. Bryan Singer did an incredible job integrating multiple characters into a thrilling and intelligent movie.

Men In Black Top Ten10. Men In Black – It was difficult picking #10 because there many worthy choices for this spot. We ultimately went with a fun movie that was a huge box office hit. The casting of Tommy Lee Jones with Will Smith is what helped solidify this comic book movie as an entertaining ride.

Do you agree or disagree with our picks? There are certainly quite a few other really good comic book movies, so it wasn’t easy to narrow things down to a top 10.  Discuss in the comments below which ones we should have left off the list and which ones we should have included instead.

I agree with many (surprisingly, not a bad job) 300, Dark Knight, Batman Begins, Men in Black, Iron Man and Superman. But wow at the rest. Far better than them are Hulk (2003), Watchmen, Blade #1, and how could you possibly leave out V for Vendetta?

    SIN CITY!!!

I love Watchmen, but I know many don’t so I won’t fault that omission. Still, Sin City is a far sight better than 300 both as a film and as an adaptation, and also predated it.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_UELZO6RW5E3N7QVEIRK24UOWL4 Spidey

Spider-man 2 is the greatest comic book movie ever made and it has almost everything. The only thing it lacks is Spidey’s trademark quips. If it had that too then it would be the perfect superhero movie. I would give it a score of 96 out of 100. It is epic, it has a great villain, the story is superb and very emotional (even religious), the script is written fantastically, characterizations are spot-on, the effects are wonderful (it won an Oscar, right?), the action sequences are still breathtaking (esp. that train sequence) and the performances are really really competent. Overall, it is definitely a much much better superhero flick than that depressing Dark Knight movie.

Very solid list. I didn’t even realize Men in Black was based on a comic book!

where the hell is the dolph lundgren punisher. men in black over that? you guys just lost me no more reading this stupid website/

  • horseheadhotep

not even close dood. everything you mentioned in support of spidey 2 is stonger in tdk. even the oscar was in a more impressive category. 4 years later, the vr is still set by the dark knight. 4 years after spiderman 2, the effects look like shit. look at the bnk heist scene. doc oc looks awesome and spidey looks like cartoon. i think the box office also reflects the difference. people like to bitch and say heath ledger dying was the only reason the film was huge, but then why were dr parnassus and im not there billion-dollar grossers?

I’d have to find a way to get The Crow in there.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1246853612 Ray Sarkisian

What about The Crow? I see that as the one that kicked off the movie boom, proving you don’t need a household name title to be successful.

Oh, wait….replace no. 10 with no. 4, and put IRON MAN as my no. 4. and switch X2 with X-Men: First Class.

  • Ransom Harris

300 is awesome and a few of the mainstream movies you have on this list are great: Iron Man and Dark Knight in particular. But Men in Black? Come on, get serious! Major omissions include Sin City, V For Vendetta and Watchmen.

  • Loony

Skipping SIN CITY as the best and in fact only thorough movie adaptation of the comic says it all.

  • Loony

Yes, WATCHMEN — thank you for reminding me of the UNAVOIDABLE fact happilly omitted in the above list.
