Will DC’s Injustice: Gods Among Us Make Believers Out of Us?

DC's Injustice: Gods Among Us" itemprop="thumbnailURL"/>

I’ve never been much of a fan of fighting games.  I feel like each one is a carbon copy of the ones before but with different characters.  Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, and any other games like that I just couldn’t find myself getting into.  But then I saw a trailer for Injustice:  Gods Among Us and I have to say that my interest is highly piqued.  So much so, I’ll probably, at the very least, rent it to see just how good it is.  But why, out of all the fighting games does this one finally catch my attention?  It’s simple.

It looks absolutely amazing.

From the trailer shown to us, DC seems to be putting their all into this game to make it stand out amongst the other fighting games that have been produce, especially that fan-favorite Marvel vs. Capcom.  And the one thing that sets it apart from other comic book inspired fighting games is the fact that this is a full-on, comic book character only fighting game.  No Street Fighter, no Capcom, no Mortal Kombat, just a roster of DC heroes and villains.

Now, the first time DC decided to give us a fighting game was back in the SNES days where they gave us Justice League: Task Force.  Back then, you couldn’t even turn around without seeing an arcade fighting game.  Everyone from comic books to movies (Alien vs. Predator being one) published one to try and cash in on the success that Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat were getting.  Sadly for DC, the game was far from a success.  It was basically a carbon copy of all the games before with absolutely nothing new or innovative added to it.

But then that trend died down (except for Mortal Kombat) and DC went back to simple putting out “regular” games with this own characters and storylines…to varying degrees of success.  And after some years of putting out mediocre, bad, and awesome games, DC decided to team up with Mortal Kombat to create a new game mixing the two worlds.  Known simply as Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, the game did moderately well and garnered respectable reviews from various sites and publishers.  Sadly, it was easily overshadowed by Marvel’s own mash-up Marvel vs. Capcom 3.

But out of the ashes comes what may be a game that shows that DC can count on more than Batman to make a sale.  So far, the only characters revealed are Superman, Batman, The Flash, Harley Quinn, Solomon Grundy, Wonder Woman, and a glimpse of what most people are speculating to be Lex Luthor in the Brainiac Suite.  On top of a so far solid roster, we are given glimpses as to different locations these characters will be fighting in.  From the streets and building of Metropolis, to the dank and humble abode of the Batcave, it seems like these characters will be smashing through them and more.  Using everything around them, like cars, as weapons of mass destruction…at least to their foes.

Even from the slight gameplay we’ve seen, it looks amazing.  The graphics are smooth and realistic (as a game can be) and the transitions from the streets to the inside of a building you’ve just thrown someone through are both epic and smooth.  And more than that, it looks genuinely fun.  Which for me, is hard and rare to say as no other game like this has garnered that reaction in me.

But sadly enough, the game isn’t slated to come out for another year.  But believe that I, and other fans, will be keeping a close eye on any new developments and reveals they decide to give us.
