The Dark Knight Rises beats The Dark KnightChristopher Nolan’s third and final Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises, surpassed the international box office take of its predecessor The Dark Knight over the weekend, and its international take has also eclipsed the domestic take for the film, according to Box Office Mojo.

So far, the film has made $488.6 million internationally, compared to $469.7 million for The Dark Knight. We reported on this when it happened over the weekend, but there’s more.

Here in the U.S., where The Dark Knight made $533,345,358 during its run, The Dark Knight Rises has yet to catch up, having grossed less than $412 million. The Dark Knight‘s total tally of $1,003,045,358, then, still towers over the $899,761,725 that The Dark Knight Rises has made so far.

It’s also worth noting that the $411 million or so taken in by the film domestically is substantially less than the film’s international take–the 54% to 46% split seen for the new film is almost exactly the reverse of the 47% to 53% split that The Dark Knight had in the same markets.

With the anemic box office this year, most movies have made more overseas than they have in the U.S., but certainly it throws some light on the lingering question of the financial impact of the Aurora shootings on the finale’s domestic prospects.
