Any cut footage left over after Christopher Nolan’s final cut of The Dark Knight Rises will remain just that–cut footage–as representatives for the director told The Playlist yesterday that Nolan will not release an expanded cut of the film on home video, in spite of reports to the contrary.
Back in July, shortly before the theatrical release of The Dark Knight Rises, Nolan told MTV, ”I tend to try and weed things out on paper because it’s crazy expensive to shoot things that aren’t going to be in the film. It also takes up a lot of time and energy. Pretty much with all my films, there are very few deleted scenes, which always disappoints the DVD crowd.”
That position was somewhat conflicted when a costume designer told GQ that a scene believed to be in the final cut had never made it to theaters.
“that’s an awful shame, but I suppose you have to cut things,” said Lindy Hemming upon learning that a scene revealing some of Bane’s backstory was not included in the final cut of the film. “I won’t elaborate on it too much, because it isn’t in the film, but there was another section that showed you why he had the mask and where it came from.”
Hemming seemed pretty sure that the sequence was at least filmed, so whether we might get some deleted scenes on the DVD or Blu-ray remains to be seen; while Nolan says he disappoints DVD buyers, his commentaries and documentaries prove that he doesn’t skimp on the special features if he’s got the content available to him, and it appears that this and at least one other scene do exist in some form.
No official release date has been set for the release of The Dark Knight Rises, but two different rumors are circulating–one that the film will be out in time for Christmas and one that it will hit stores closer to the June release date of the Nolan-produced Superman reboot Man of Steel.
